Before I became a part of the world of wedding photography and portraiture, back when I worked as a news photographer, one of the most exciting parts of my job was rushing back to the newsroom, developing my film, and watching a moment captured in time emerge. Today the technology may be different, but my love affair with images of life’s amazing moments captured in photographs has stayed the same. After a wedding or event, I still head back to my office and look at each photo I’ve taken for my clients. I want them to enjoy the same thrill I do when they see their stories captured in images that will last forever.
When you work with me, everything I shoot for you – whether it’s a ceremony, reception or portrait– I’m also shooting for myself as a photographer. And my standards of quality are exceedingly high. I bring my unique style of photojournalism to your wedding or portrait session, and together we can create beautiful images using natural light, creative settings, and non-traditional techniques. New environments and circumstances are invigorating, and I consider it part of my job to make the most of challenging situation so I can make your memories come to life.
I have been working as a professional photographer for over 15 years. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in photojournalism, I went to work for a small suburban weekly newspaper. My first major assignment was photographing Princess Diana’s visit to Chicago in 1996.
Other stops in my career included the Daily Herald and the City 2000 project, a yearlong photo documentary of Chicago. My contribution to the project was shooting the Gage Park neighborhood on the city’s south side where I grew up. These images appeared at the City’s historic Water Tower, the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Chicago Historical Center.
I also worked as a photo editor for Encyclopedia Britannica and began shooting for the Associated Press where I found a great niche as a sports photographer. In June of 2003, my photo of Sammy Sosa’s corked bat ran in hundreds of newspapers and magazine’s around the world.
Additionally, I’m an avid boxing fan and former Golden Gloves competitor, so I was thrilled to land a contract job with HBO Sports that gave me a change to shoot more than twenty of the networks televised boxing matches.
Other clients include Getty Images, Wireimage, the Chicago Tribune the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Reader, and Northwestern University. Several fortune 500 companies also work with me when they need portraiture and coverage of trade shows.
When I’m not taking photographs, I enjoy the Cubs, Blackhawks, pizza, the Clash, Breaking Bad, Lake Louise, Boxing, the Palace Grill and watching my son grow up!
Let me help you plan your wedding photography from start to finish and create beautiful images of your ceremony and reception that you can treasure forever. What Clients are Saying!
“Steve’s a true artist, and does an exceptional job of seeing” the right candid shot, the right expression, the right moment.”
– Trina & Nial
“Working with Steve Matteo was the best experience. He is so professional, personable, creative, and polite. He gave me exactly what I wanted and had great suggestions. Steve was very flexible, arrived on time, and even scheduled an evening session with us so that we could take pictures in front of Chicago landmarks downtown, after the reception. I booked Steve from out of state as I live in Kansas and he is in Chicago. I found him from a google search and it was such a good thing. I had never met him, but i read his reviews and looked at his photos and they were awesome. I would recommend his services to anyone and everyone. I do plan on using him again for future events.”

“Steve went the extra mile to make sure we still had a large range of photographs to remember our day! Even in the inclement winter weather he captured beautiful shots of Chicago and of places that were special to us.”

“It is a pleasure to recommend Mr Matteo as one of the finest photographers. After much research, we came across Steve’s site and from the first look, I fell in love with the pictures. He seemed to be focused on making the pictures personable and spontaneous. As an extremely picky bride, making this decision was easy as I could tell that he cares about the story this couple is creating. Meeting him was as easy-going and productive as we expected. Steve listened to our suggestions and concerns and together we made a plan for the big day.”
