About Steve

When I worked as a news photographer, one of the most exciting parts of the job was to rush back, develop my film and see a great moment captured in time. While the tools of the trade have changed and I can view my images on the spot, I still love to get back to my office and surf through the photos. I want my clients to enjoy the same thrill when they see their own story and captured moments, with all the love, smiles and emotions of the day.
Although you’ll get my unique style of photojournalism, we’ll also create beautiful portraits using natural light, interesting backgrounds and some non traditional techniques. I enjoy the challenge of routinely working in new settings and making the most of any situation.
I really love what I do and I hope my passion for photography is expressed through my work. When I’m not taking photographs, I enjoy the Cubs, Blackhawks, pizza, the Clash, Breaking Bad, Lake Louise, Boxing, the Palace Grill and watching my son grow up!

Credentials

Steve Matteo has been working as a professional photographer for over 15 years. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in photojournalism, he went to work for a small suburban weekly newspaper. His first major assignment was photographing Princess Diana’s visit to Chicago in 1996.

Other stops included the Daily Herald , and the City 2000 project (a year long photo documentary of Chicago). His contribution to the project was shooting the Gage Park neighborhood on the city’s south
side where he grew up. These images appeared at the City’s historic Water Tower, the Chicago Cultural Center and the Chicago Historical Center. Steve also worked as a photo editor for Encyclopedia Britannica and began shooting for the Associated Press where he excelled as a sports photographer. In June of 2003, Steve’s photo of Sammy Sosa’s corked bat ran in hundreds of newspapers and magazine’s around the world.

An avid boxing fan and former Golden Gloves competitor, Steve also landed a contract job with HBO Sports where he would go on to shoot more than twenty of the networks televised boxing matches.

Other clients include Getty Images, Wireimage, the Chicago Tribune the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader and Northwestern University. Several fortune 500 companies also contract Steve for portraiture, trade shows and just about any type of photography needed.
