Steve Matteo has been working as a professional photographer for over fifteen years. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in photojournalism, he immediately went to work for a small suburban weekly newspaper. His first major assignment was photographing Princess Diana’s visit to Chicago in 1996.
His next stop was the Daily Herald where he worked as a staff photographer, shooting news, sports and feature assignments. When the opportunity to work on the City 2000 project (a year long photo documentary of Chicago) came along, Steve left the Herald and went on to freelance. His contribution to the project was shooting the Gage Park neighborhood on the city’s south
side where he grew up. These images appeared at the City’s historic Water Tower, the Chicago Cultural Center and the Chicago Historical Center. They were also part of a traveling exhibit around the country. That year, Steve also worked as a photo editor for Encyclopedia Britannica and the official web site for the 2000 Olympic Summer games.
Now liberated from his nine to five job several other photographic opportunities opened up in 2000. Steve began working as a photographer for the Associated Press where he excelled as a sports photographer. In June of 2003, Steve’s photo of Sammy Sosa’s corked bat ran in hundreds of newspapers and magazine’s around the world.
An avid boxing fan and former Golden Gloves competitor, Steve also landed a contract job with HBO Sports where he would go on to shoot more than twenty of the networks televised boxing matches.
Steve has also worked for Getty Images, Wireimage, the Chicago Tribune the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Reader and Northwestern University. Several fortune 500 companies also contract Steve for portraiture, trade shows and just about any type of photography needed.
As wedding photographer, Steve uses his photojournalist skills to put together a story of the clients wedding day. Aside from bridal party and family photographs, none of the photographs are posed.
He uses years of experience, available light and strobe to show the beauty of your wedding with his camera rather than overdone photoshop effects to sensationalize them. His expertise as a photojournalist is what sets Steve ahead of the rest. He takes a situation and makes it special. He adds life to life’s events. He gives personality and emotion to each shot and he captures the moment and gives it feeling.

“It’s such an important moment in a person’s life and capturing that for the couple to cherish forever is a very satisfying accomplishment. While the traditions can be the same, each wedding is different in its own way. Each story is different and being a photojournalist helps me tell that story in a manner that others may not see,” said Steve.
Steve Matteo can help you plan your wedding photography needs from start to finish and create the beautiful images you desire. Also, planning certain portraits at the right time of day, in all types of weather, can be the key to making an otherwise average situation look spectacular.

“Steve’s a true artist, and does an exceptional job of seeing” the right candid shot, the right expression, the right moment.”

“Working with Steve Matteo was the best experience. He is so professional, personable, creative, and polite. He gave me exactly what I wanted and had great suggestions. Steve was very flexible, arrived on time, and even scheduled an evening session with us so that we could take pictures in front of Chicago landmarks downtown, after the reception. I booked Steve from out of state as I live in Kansas and he is in Chicago. I found him from a google search and it was such a good thing. I had never met him, but i read his reviews and looked at his photos and they were awesome. I would recommend his services to anyone and everyone. I do plan on using him again for future events.”

“It is a pleasure to recommend Mr Matteo as one of the finest photographers. After much research, we came across Steve’s site and from the first look, I fell in love with the pictures. He seemed to be focused on making the pictures personable and spontaneous. As an extremely picky bride, making this decision was easy as I could tell that he cares about the story this couple is creating. Meeting him was as easy-going and productive as we expected. Steve listened to our suggestions and concerns and together we made a plan for the big day.”
